For a dog that is highly food-motivated, can this be coercive instead of cooperative?

In the “What causes reactivity” handout, it says we don’t need to know the reasons for a dog’s reactivity. But does it help to figure out why a dog is experiencing reactivity, and would the answer ever affect how we approach training?

Hi, I’m Moriah, and my dog is Roma, a 2.5-year-old female mixed breed dog. Roma was found as a stray by Pima Animal Care Center and brought to the shelter, where I saw her a few days later and decided to bring her home! She is reactive to other dogs whether on leash or off, but particularly when she is on leash. I’m not sure if she is fearful of other dogs or over-excited. So far I have mostly been managing her reactivity, but I’d like to help change how she feels so she doesn’t have to be stressed or overexcited when she does see them and so that we can do more things together.
